*Consumers may see a discrepancy between reported capacity and actual capacity; the storage industry standard is to display capacity in decimal. However, the operating system usually calculates capacity in binary format, causing traditional HDD and SSD to show a lower capacity in Windows. In the case of SSDs, some of the capacity is reserved for formatting and redundancy for wear leveling. These reserved areas on an SSD may occupy up to 5% of the drive’s storage capacity. On the Vertex Series the naming convention reflects this and the 30 is equivalent to 32GB, the 60 is equivalent to the 64GB and so on.

**Rated speeds are based on the Intel P45 chipset, speeds may vary slightly dependent on the benchmark used, drivers, windows version, bios version and file size. We recommend using ATTO and PC Mark Vantage for benchmarking SSDs.

***Solid State Drives DO NOT require defragmentation. It may decrease the lifespan of the drive. Please visit our SSD support forums for more information.

"With the Vertex series SSD controllers OCZ offers an extremely high performing SSD with a new controller and...in addition to that a nice phat 64MB cache to tackle the slow small files write issue. As such, the OCZ Vertex series SSD drives are to date the best SSDs we have ever tested. It is nearly baffling how fast it really is. It looks like OCZ struck gold with the Vertex. As such it comes very much recommended.”

Benchmark Reviews
"The OCZ Vertex easily outperforms the stated 160 MBps specification for write-to bandwidth, as our tests resulted in a 225.2 MBps average with a 242.7 MBps maximum peak write bandwidth. Positioned in first place and well above the RAID-0 performance a set of Western Digital VelociRaptor hard drives can offer, the OCZ Vertex outperforms every single storage drive product by a significant margin. Based on the collection of benchmark performance tests we've conducted, the OCZ Vertex offers linear bandwidth so far ahead of previous competition that it might require calling this a new generation product in order to justify how so many other 'new' products have just been left behind. the OCZ Vertex MLC Solid State Drive offers tremendous performance in read and write bandwidth speeds and an exceptional 0.10 ms response time at a attainable price. Second to none, the Vertex SSD easily outperforms a RAID-0 set of Western Digital VelociRaptor hard drives. I can recommend the OCZ Vertex to cutting-edge super-users and performance enthusiasts who want unmatched response and speed from their computer system."

PC Perspective
"The OCZ Vertex 120GB drive is the first drive to consistently beat out the Intel X25-M. The new OCZ Vertex solid state drive is one of the most impressive SSDs we have tested to date. I know that there is much excitement in the hardware community about this drive and for good reason: it uses a brand new controller from a brand new company and as such performance was an unknown. Many in the community have been billing it as the first true competitor to Intel's X25-M line of mainstream MLC drives and it indeed lives up to that status. As it turns out, the performance lives up to the excitement and expectations."

"The OCZ Technology Vertex series drives are quite incredible. This is the first SSD drive I can honestly say is completely stable when used as a system drive. It's also incredibly fast. Reading access times are lightning fast and applications load in an instant, making the Vertex series of drives ideal as the operating system drive with all the user’s installed applications. Noise levels from the drive is null; there are no moving parts so the drive is completely silent.OCZ Technology care about their customers and they have an excellent support forum. There is no doubt in my mind that a lot of work has gone into the design of this drive, to make sure it performs extremely well under very heavy load in the real world. No doubt the much more advanced Indilinx Barefoot SSD controller also plays its part in boosting performance. The Vertex also received our highest editor rating."

"As a visual display of Vertex's supreme dominance, it stands way above everything in the database, by a factor of two. Compared to it, our beloved WD Raptor looks like an old guy trying to run twenty miles faster then a young guy doing marathon on a daily basis. Vertex is by far the fastest drive we've had a pleasure of testing so far. It kicks ass in read performance, very low CPU usage, and random seek time that's in the 0.1-0.11ms region. We give our kuddos to OCZ crew and award this drive with our Editor's Choice award."

“SSD response time and I/O performance are two crucial elements that should be taken into consideration when buying a new SSD. We found out that OCZ Vertex 120GB offered 3.8x faster performance than our benchmark HDD. On the other hand, its close competitor G-Monster V2 was only 2.3 faster. After concluding all tests and looking at performance comparisons, I understood why OCZ Vertex series is so hot”

“The real world performance of OCZ Vertex was just stunning. The user can save 50% time when loading the popular FarCry2. Moreover, we had not a single problem encountered when loading OS. There was not a single incident of freezing or lag. OCZ Vertex is simply THE KING of MLCs. The performance of this model is even superior to some much more expensive SLC models available currently on the market.”

“The sequential read performance of the latest generation of SSDs is nothing short of amazing. The OCZ Vertex pulls through with 250MB/s, over twice the speed of the VelociRaptor and 2.5x the speed of the Samsung SLC drive. The Vertex I do believe we have a true value alternative to the X25-M. The Vertex can give you a similar experience, definitely one superior to even the fastest hard drives, but at a lower price. If you want price/performance, the Vertex appears to be the best option."

“The Vertex series uses the inteligent Indilinx, Barefoot controller. This means increased performance in addition to that you get 64MB cache. The random write speed show the true power of the OCZ Vertex. It is clear that the Vertex is the next generation MLC based SSD drives. The Intel X25-M 80GB is a good alternative for the Vertex but for the price of an Intel you can almost get two 60GB Vertex drives. At the current price point, OCZ makes the Vertex available for a large group of consumers.”

"OCZ Vertex series SSDs are based on Indilinx controller and offer 64MB onboard cache memory. Maximum power consumption is just 2W and in stand-by mode a mere 0.5W. Vertex series models offer a good firmware, that can be updated by users – one doesn’t have to wait to long to get the latest version. The most powerful MLC SSD is here – OCZ Vertex series – a very, very serious competitor to Intel’s X25-M.”

"For the first time there is a new contender, the OCZ Vertex. The OCZ Vertex still benefits from the multiple tweaks you can do to increase your system’s performance with SSDs, but it doesn’t rely on it to perform properly; it works just as well 'plug & play' and this is a must for most users out there. While all those benchmark charts displaying 200+mb/s read and 150+mb/s write are nice to see, it’s good to actually have some idea of what that performance brings you in real life, the SSD powered system is more than three times faster. On two identical systems you can do no other upgrade which will give you such a boost. It’s this difference which make the Laptop with the OCZ SSD so fast. This drive is the single most important system upgrade you can do in 2009."

Benchmark Reviews: SSD RAID 0 Performance
"Putting two OCZ Vertex SSDs into a striped RAID-0 array really let the technology shine, as the bandwidth scores were as high as Benchmark Reviews has seen. The RAID-0 Vertex set performed at 504.9 MBps average read speed, while write performance was 437.2 MBps. That amounts to 104% read speed improvement, and 94% write performance. As a single drive, the Vertex SSD is second to none (at least until OCZ launches the Summit SSD), and easily outperforms a RAID-0 set of Western Digital VelociRaptor hard drives. Place two OCZ Vertex SSDs into a RAID-0 striped array, and the results are phenomenal."

“The Western Digital Velociraptor, Caviar Black and Samsung F1 drives may be among the fastest mechanical SATA disks on the market, but as we've seen today they are absolutely no match for the OCZ Vertex. The Vertex also produced tangible benefits in Windows start-up and game loading times. Unreal Tournament III went from menu to map in 1/2 the time of the popular Samsung F1 1TB hard disk...Similarly the time taken to copy a massive 100GB file to the disk was also completed a whopping 4 minutes faster than its nearest competitor."

"The OCZ Vertex drive is one of the best purchases a user can make to increase how fast their computer feels. At first use, it didn’t feel that much faster, but after using the regular hard drive again, it feels like I’m using the computer in a giant vat of molasses. In the end, adding an SSD can dramatically increase your computer’s speed and even your own productivity. The OCZ Vertex drives do offer big numbers and high transfer speeds, but more importantly they offer latencies like 0.3ms. The Vertex represents a fantastic value and can breathe new life into a user’s computer."

“WOW, this is probably the best way to describe the experience you get with the OCZ Vertex. SSD drives have had a bad reputation in the past for low write performance, with the Vertex OCZ shows what is possible and it simply destroys the other drives on all fronts. As mentioned the previous issues from other SSDs are gone with the Vertex, in all benchmarks we ran the Vertex simply performed amazingly. We also appreciate the fact that OCZ offers the TRIM tool with the latest firmware. If you look at the performance increase you are getting the price is no longer an issue. Compare it to a high-end VGA card for example which only increases performance on a few applications while the OCZ Vertex gives you an advantage on so many different applications."

"With the Vertex 120GB MLC OCZ shows a solid product which definitely is an upgrade to a conventional hard drive. The Indilinx Barefoot controller with 64 MByte cache - in case of the 120 GByte version - combined with the most recent firmware, does a good job. The best thing about the OCZ Vertex 120 GByte SSD with 64 MByte cache is the fact that also the throughput with small block is increased. When it comes down to reading 4 KByte blocks randomly it is even faster than an Intel X25-M drive. This definitely is a step into the right direction and we hope that OCZ together with Indilinx further upgrades their firmware so that in the future we can expect even more performance out of these drives. The OCZ Vertex with 120 GByte capacitiy is a solid performer and as a system disk a good upgrade to recent hard drives."

"Here in PC Mag SG lab, we have tested quite a number of SSDs in the past 12 months, with the Intel M-25X being the most impressive offering so far…Thankfully, with arrival of OCZ Vertex, we have finally found a worthy X25-M alternative that costs slightly less from the cost per gigabyte perspective. OCZ Vertex series uses a different controller than those found in the majority of mainstream SSDs, and coupled with special cared OCZ injected into its firmware, the end result is a blazingly fast drive that’s very competitive in different workload scenarios. Granted, it’s an MLC based SSD, but it doesn’t suffer from weak random write issue and its I/O performance on server application is simply amazing."

"OCZ have targeted the SSD market in a more aggressive manner than any other manufacturer in the last 12 months. The OCZ Vertex series are probably the fastest and better SSDs available in the retail market at this point of time. The Vertex drives are the first able to compete with Intel's high end offerings, and at the same time they are notably cheaper. The Vertex series drives should make excellent OS drives for desktops and/or replacements for notebooks because of their 2.5" format, since they are manifold faster than any mechanical drive. “The OCZ Vertex 120GB SSD costs 3.39€ per Gigabyte. Although they can be found cheaper – such as OCZ’s own Core and Apex series – we would rather advise you to buy the slightly more expensive Vertex. Based on our benchmarks we can conclude that Intel’s X25-M is slightly faster but with 3.89 € / GB it is also slightly more expensive. When the smoke clears, we see that the battle has ended in pretty much a draw between the two giants, which is an enormous achievement. If we compare with most other traditional and SSD drives available on the market, we need more to achieve the same performance as the Vertex does on its own. This is quite impressive. The OCZ 120GB is the latest generation which offers a beautiful high reading speed and that is regardless of the operating system used.”

“We use PCMark Vantage exclusively for the SSDs in hard disk benchmark - the more the better. The Ultra Drive ME Super Talent is significantly behind the OCZ Vertex. Although difficult to choose a clear winner, the Vertex from OCZ is victorious in many of our tests.”

“I decided to test two popular 2.5-in. laptop drives to determine the advantages each offers. I tested their impact on battery life, the read and write speeds, cold boot-ups and restarts, and CPU utilization. SSDs are naturally more rugged than HDDs because they have no moving parts. OCZ claims its Vertex drive can sustain up to 1,500 Gs of shock before sustaining damage or a drop in performance. The Vertex is OCZ's second iteration of an SSD, and it uses 64MB of cache to artificially enhance the write performance and a more advanced Indillinx controller. Not surprisingly, the Vertex SSD handily beat the Seagate HDD for cold boots: 20 seconds to start up Windows XP for the OCZ and 40 seconds for the Seagate. The SSD also beat the HDD for restarts: 26 seconds versus 37 seconds. The SSD outperformed the HDD in most benchmarking tests, as well as handily beating out the competition for boot-ups."

"OCZ's Vertex 60GB drive proved to be fast and costs more or less $200, making it very appealing for entry-level users seeking for a quiet and very fast SSD. The Indilinx controller with 64MB cache onboard makes the difference here and ensures a shutter-free operation. It is really good to see that OCZ supports users in the best possible way!OCZ's 3- year warranty is also there to make you feel confident with the Vertex drive. It seems that you cannot really go wrong with buying this product. Good work OCZ!"

"Shipping with an Indilinx Barefoot controller and posting decent benchmarks throughout, the OCZ Vertex range of SSDs live up to their performance billing. Read and write speeds are healthy, evinced by our benchmarks, and we like the fact that OCZ has smaller-capacity models in the range, starting out at 30GB."
