OCZ Apex Series SATA II 2.5" SSD *EOL
The OCZ Apex SATA II 2.5” Solid State Drive (SSD) Series is the affordable midrange offering for enthusiasts, system builders, and mainstream computer users demanding the latest technology in this fast-developing sector of the storage market. This cost-efficient SSD offers a reliable upgrade from traditional hard disc storage while maintaining a price point that is truly within the reach of a wide range of consumers.
Offering your notebook or desktop system the incredible benefits of flash-based storage, the OCZ Apex Series is the result of all the latest breakthroughs in SSD technology, including new internal RAID 0 architecture, updated controller design, and speedy 230MB/sec read and 160MB/sec write speeds. OCZ continues to place flash mass storage technology within reach of the average consumer with the Apex Series and delivers on the promise of SSDs as an alternative to traditional hard drives in consumer targeted mobile applications.
The OCZ Apex Series drives feature a durable yet lightweight alloy housing, and because OCZ SSDs have no moving parts, the drives are more rugged than traditional hard drives. Designed for ultimate reliability, Apex Series SSDs have an excellent 1.5 million hour mean time before failure (MTBF) ensuring peace of mind over the long term. All Apex Series drives come backed a two year warranty and OCZ’s legendary service and support.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Solid State Drives DO NOT require defragmentation. It may decrease the lifespan of the drive.
*Consumers may see a discrepancy between reported capacity and actual capacity; the storage industry standard is to display capacity in decimal. However, the operating system usually calculates capacity in binary format, causing traditional HDD and SSD to show a lower capacity in Windows. In the case of SSDs, some of the capacity is reserved for formatting and redundancy for wear leveling. These reserved areas on an SSD may occupy up to 5% of the drive’s storage capacity. On the Apex Series the new naming convention reflects this and the 60 is equivalent to the 64GB and so on.
**Rated speeds are based on Intel P45 chipset and may vary slightly dependent on the benchmark used, drivers, windows version, bios version and file size. We recommend using ATTO and PC Mark Vantage for benchmarking SSDs.

“Compared to a traditional hard drive, the Apex is almost twice as fast as it reads conventional relative data, and when the data is still writing about one third faster. In particular, the system starts accelerating, but also programs such as Adobe Photoshop and InDesign are noticeably faster after the disk change.”
Custom PC Magazine
“The OCZ was much faster at writing data than the Intel. The OCZ Apex was quick to boot into Vista and load Crysis, and its FC test performance was roughly as fast as the 375 GBP Intel X25-M 80GB. As the OCZ is cheaper and has twice the capacity of the Intel, it’s great for a fast and quiet PC.”
Mac World (France)
“The SSD shows a big difference in terms of access time, with an average of less than 0.3 ms against 15 ms for the Scorpio and around 17 ms for the Hitachi. On all these points, the SSD is better than conventional hard drives. The Apex SSD is still far ahead when it comes to reading.”

"The OCZ Apex 120GB solid stage drive is an entry level product for users who need an SSD drive without spending a fortune. Aggressively priced and offering twice the capacity of the fastest SSD on the planet, OCZ's solution deserves some attention."
Hardware.info (Netherlands)
“When we also consider pricing of SSD, the model you definitely want to have is the OCZ Apex [120GB]. Thanks to a modern controller, the MLC drive gets an outstanding performance and checking the price of 250 € for 120GB is actually a Bargain. Enough reason to award this product with the silver medal!”
Hardware-Test (Denmark)
“All in all, we must say that Apex lived up to expectations of being a SSD, all circumstances considered, is probably one of the most attractive offers for first-time SSD-buyers. The price in relation to the performance looks very attractive. OCZ Apex performed really well in our tests, even in spite of OCZ's calling this SSD mainstream. The "Platinum PRODUCT OF THE YEAR Award" is our absolutely highest award. A product, which receives this award, has a top score in all categories. The Platinum Award is given to products, which excels in all areas, including the price. We see a reviewed product, which receives this award, as the ultimate product in its category.”

"Our findings show the Apex is a very worthy competitor in the value / budget SSD market, and especially so when two are paired in RAID 0. Bottom line - if you are looking for a fast, large capacity SSD that only takes a minimal amount of tweaking to run flawlessly as an operating system drive and won't break the bank (relative to other SSDs), the Apex is worth checking out. OCIA.net has awarded the OCZ Apex 120 GB SSD our Seal of Approval."
ComputerWorld
"I came upon OCZ Technology's Apex SATA II SSD and was impressed not so much with its price. Boot time for Windows XP was excellent: From a cold start, it took just 22 seconds; with a restart, it took 25 seconds. (Normal boot time with a 7,200-rpm laptop drive is 70 seconds.) And for Mac users, the same drive boots Mac OS X 10.5.6 on a late model MacBook in 23 seconds from start-up chime to desktop. Overall, the drive is a pretty good performer at a very attractive price. If you're not looking to break I/O barriers, but still want the many benefits of SSD -- such as improved read/write performance, lower power consumption and greater durability -- this drive is a solid choice."

“Good, fast storage for a gaming rig is pretty desirable, since you’ll need to have room for your OS as well as the huge amount of games, programs and media files stored. This drive has 120GB of flash, giving 117GB of usable space. Plenty of space for everything you’d need, and the speed is no slouch either – with an average read of 177MB/s, maximum burst of 235.2MB/s and an access speed of only 0.2ms. It’s not limited too much by space, and the price is accessible enough for the serious enthusiast to consider it as a real option – after all, who can touch the collness factor of having an SSD-powered rig?”

"OCZ have produced a fantastic mouse. I love the colours; the software to set your different profiles is very easy to use. The ergonomic design is brilliant, and the mouse cable tidy, which consists of little etches on the underside of the mouse, is a fantastic idea. You can choose how you wish to route the cables. Another nifty idea from the team behind this mouse."
ExtremeTech
"Overall, the OCZ Apex 120GB drive is an interesting beast. Its cost-per-gigabyte is low relative to the competition...and the overall performance is better than the early generation of SSDs. You'll find the Apex 120GB drive to be a cost effective solution."
OCaholic
"The OCZ Apex is a solid performer and worth considering when upgrading your system. With the Apex OCZ brought a product to the market that performs well and is worth considering when upgrading from a conventional hard drive.”
Pro-Clockers
“I was more than pleased with the performance of the Behemoth while I was testing it…When it came down to speed the Behemoth was fast and very accurate. But the Behemoth has more than just OCZ's name, it is a great mouse for a gamer that wants it all. The mouse is fast and accurate which is a good thing, but the Behemoth also offers a laundry list of customizable features that adds to its appeal. Blazing 3200 DPI is nothing to sneeze at, as the mouse pointer flies across the screen to take out the next alien in your way to supreme domination.”
Neowin
"In my personal opinion, the OCZ Apex Series 120GB model offers a good compromise between value for money, and great performance. You will love this excellent alternative to a traditional HDD, whether it is in your desktop or in your laptop."
Hardware Canucks
“It really is hard to make the Apex stutter, and we had to work at it to get it to stutter enough to be considered anything more than 'a meaningful pause' length of time. We have looked long and hard at the numbers, played and replayed our experiences using it as an OS drive and we have come to one unavoidable conclusion: the Apex is a very good drive. The proof is in the pudding so to speak and in this case the pudding is definitely the real world performance testing. In those real world performance tests, the Apex really shone.”
Sweclockers (Sweden)
"When it comes to write performance the OCZ Apex takes a respactable first place! mpressive figures from the OCZ Apex drives when it comes to writing performance! The Velociraptor comes in second before all other SSD drives. In our test there were only two drives that stand out: Intel and the OCZ Apex. It clearly shows that OCZ has a lot of experience with Jmicron and they make the best out of it. The trump card of the OCZ Apex drive is the internal RAID-0 architecture which clearly shows in some of the benchmarks. The pricing of the Apex is a bit above drives however considering the increased performance it’s worth spending a bit extra.”

"The OCZ SSD knocked a stunning 33 seconds off the Portal load time, and 25 seconds off the Windows boot process. Compared to a standard SATA II drive, the results are phenomenal. They’re pretty impressive when held up against other SSDs as well - the OCZ Apex comfortably beats cheaper SSDs while being less expensive. If you really want to eliminate system bottlenecks, it’s a price worth paying."
Hot Hardware
"The OCZ Apex drive came out on top in regard to write performance. In relation to the other drives we tested, the OCZ Apex Series SSD was clearly faster than the other drives overall. In the current market, considering the performance of the 120GB model we tested, that makes the OCZ Apex Series drives a good value in light of its competition. As we saw in the benchmarks, the OCZ Apex Series drive performs very well. All things considered OCZ's Apex Series drives seem like a good deal to us."
Tom's Guide
"We like that the OCZ unit only has two bottom panels, which makes access to where you add the components simple and easy. With DIY notebooks, the sky is the limit. Here’s our unit fully assembled with a little gesture of encouragement from us at Tom’s. Even if you don’t get up the gumption to build your own notebook, perhaps what you’ve seen here will show you that upgrading your existing laptop is also no big deal. There’s no need to send it to a specialist. Do it yourself and have some fun along the way."
Tech Radar
"The OCZ Apex series falls into the affordable mid-range category. Its 2.5-inch format means it can be used as a direct replacement for any SATA II laptop drive, or mounted in the floppy bay of a standard PC. With no moving parts, it's completely silent. The OCZ SSD knocked a stunning 33 seconds off the Portal load time, and 25 seconds off the Windows boot process.Compared to a standard SATA II drive, the results are phenomenal. They're pretty impressive when held up against other SSDs as well - the OCZ Apex comfortably beats cheaper SSDs, and is close to Intel's X25-M while being less expensive. If you really want to eliminate system bottlenecks, it's a price worth paying."
Legit Reviews
"Vista booted in an average of just over 17 seconds from BIOS load completion to the login screen, which is very refreshing. Loading Adobe Photoshop CS4 took a nearly instantaneous 2.3 seconds and most other apps loaded so quickly it was pointless to time them. The benefits of SSD's include quiet operation, greater durability and the potential for less power requirements which make them very attractive to notebook users; many of which have 5400 or 7200 RPM drives, which are no match for the Apex. If you have been itching to pick up an SSD and have the money to do so, the OCZ Apex SSD is a solid performer, meeting rated specifications with a relatively affordable price tag for an MLC SSD at this capacity. I have no problems recommending this product, especially knowing that OCZ is readily available to respond to any possible questions you may have."

“Many SSD products available on the market are more or less the same. Unlike OCZ Apex series models, which are based on upgraded architecture with built-in RAID 0 chips.”
Sweclockers (Sweden)
“OCZ has been at the forefront of SSD storage for the consumer market. OCZ has extensive experience and makes the best of the situation. The Apex trump card was the internal RAID 0 configuration, with extremely good write performance for large files. Looking at the higher performance shown by OCZ drive, it may be worth adding a few more crowns on it. Generally, better performance than other JMicron based devices.”
CPU Magazine
“In one fell swoop, OCZ’s Apex series strives to not only set itself apart as a performance champion but also address the reservations many power users have when it comes to solid-state capacity. As a result, OCZ’s offering rises to the top of the pack with its balance of desktop-class capacity and solid-state speed.”
Driver Heaven
"From our benchmarks and real-world performance it seems that implementing a RAID chip in the Apex SSD was a very clever idea. The internal RAID 0 chip increases the overall performance of the drive significantly without doubling the cost of the drive. We have been using the Apex as our primary OS drive for several and we faced no stuttering or freezing problems at all. The OCZ Apex Series SSD drives are an excellent choice for replacing the main drive of a high end laptop or desktop PC. They are exceptionally fast and very durable with little power consumption. If ultimate speeds are the most important factor to you, the OCZ Apex SSD drives can also be set to assemble a very fast RAID array for even higher performance."
Fudzilla
"With realtime read and write speeds three times better than traditional HDDs, such an investment starts making sense. Apart from the stunning speed, we were quite happy to find that the SSD technology brought the 'golden silence' to the table. While mechanical drives stand a fair chance of corrupting your data if your laptop drops from your hands, SSD keep them safe. So, with speeds in mind and 120GB for a reasonable buck, we’ve no choice but to dub this a 'Fudzilla Recommended' device."
CD Freaks
“Reading and writing speeds on the OCZ Technology Apex series 120GB SSD is excellent and the fastest single drive we have ever tested here on CD Freaks. As we can see from the results, the OCZ Technology Apex series RAID 0 array SSD has the highest overall score among our tested drives, by quite some margin, with the Apex series single drive also giving an impressive score. It is a clean sweep for the OCZ Technology Apex series 120GB SSD drives; they came out on top of all our tests. Make no mistake about it. The OCZ Technology Apex series SSD drives are seriously fast. Install your operating system on the Apex drive and it will completely transform your PC, if you are currently using a traditional hard drive. Everything you do on your PC will just happen so much faster.”
Benchmark Reviews
"OCZ may not have created the Solid State Drive, but they've done more to bring SSD technology mainstream than any other company in the industry. Based on the collection of benchmark tests we conducted, the OCZ Apex SSD performs at the top of our linear bandwidth charts. In conclusion, the OCZ Apex MLC Solid State Drive offers an excellent balance of read and write bandwidth speed and an exceptional response time at a modest price. Second to only one other SSD product on the present market, the OCZ Apex nearly matches performance at half the cost. Many would claim that MLC SSDs aren't worth the trouble, but for desktop and notebook users the Apex series is perfectly suited for high-performance tasks. I recommend the OCZ Apex series to demanding consumers looking for highest-order speed with near-instant response time... and excellent value for the performance it delivers."
PC Perspective
“The OCZ Apex drive, with its very unique dual-controller RAID-0 configuration, is able to compete in a way that no other JMicron-based drive has been able to thus far. In general, we found that the Apex SSD was able to outperform the Intel X25-M in terms of sustained write speeds though it was slower in sustained read speeds. We found the Apex drive to be better than nearly all other storage configurations we tested against. The OCZ Apex is a new take on the solid state drive that offers both high performance and the low cost of multi-level cell technology. If you wanted a new SSD for your laptop or desktop but were scared off by either the price or performance of other options, the OCZ Apex series is just what you are looking for.”
