"For us, modular power supplies still have a lot to offer thanks to that relatively hassle-free cable management, and of course OCZ's ModXStream Pro fits into that mindset nicely. The real beauty of the ModXStream Pro 500W is in its price, and this is quite a feather in OCZ's cap given the quality of this unit and how it compares in pricing terms to some of its rivals. If you're looking for a new power supply in this kind of wattage range, then the ModXStream Pro 500W is not far short of a bargain. It does the job it sets out to do and does it comfortably, which makes it well worth a look."
Overclockers Online
"The ModXStream Pro 500W available for about $60 dollars holds quite well against the bigger, more expensive players out there. Our tests showed that the unit runs cool. The unit stayed well within defined ATX specifications and given the price, the ModXStream Pro is definitely an attractive unit worth considering."
Computer Power User
"There is such a thing as overkill in the world of power supplies. If you’re not sitting on a 130W processor and at least one high-end graphics card, then there’s very little reason for you to sink a couple hundred dollars into a 1kW+ PSU. In fact, OCZ’s $80 ModXStream Pro 600W comes mighty close to addressing your needs even if you are driving an enthusiast rig. It does boast many of the same design elements as other units in our lineup—an intelligent blend of modular and fixed cables, a 135mm fan for quiet cooling, and 80 Plus standard certification. Of course, the fact that this power supply is amongst the quietest in our roundup is icing on the cake."
Hardware Secrets
"OCZ ModXStream Pro 500 W is as good as the 600 W model we reviewed before, providing high efficiency (81%-85%), voltages very close to their nominal values (3% regulation against standard 5%), noise and ripple levels within proper range, ability to deliver its labeled power at high temperatures and protections up and running. Then we have its price: only USD 40 at Newegg.com, making it a bargain and being a power supply with one of the best cost/benefit ratios in the market."
Tech-Reviews (United Kingdom)
"As you can see from the results, the OCZ ModXStream scores well in both the efficiency and wattage department. Furthermore, the noise output from the unit is impressive with it hardly being heard. In terms of usability, the OCZ also proves itself worthy with an excellent set of connectivity options and attractive grey and red colour scheme to follow suit."
CPU Magazine
“Seriously? You see OCZ, you see $39.99, and you have to ask why we dig this PSU? Ok, let’s see: Here’s a modular product with 135mm worth of fan blades you’ll seldom hear. It’s an 80 Plus achiever with on 6-pin and on 6+2-pin PCI-E lead; these are attributes not every budget-priced power supply can claim. Oh, and OCZ tells us there are rebates available.”
Hardware Secrets
“OCZ ModXStream Pro 600 W proved to be an outstanding mainstream 600 W power supply, surprising us at all and every level. Being an inexpensive unit that has only the standard 80 Plus certification, we were expecting it to achieve efficiency around 82-83% across the board, but in fact it could maintain efficiency between 83.5% and 86.6% when we pulled up to 480 W from it (81.9% at 600 W), almost granting it 80 Plus Bronze certification… making OCZ ModXStream Pro 600 W a bargain, being the power supply with one of the best cost/benefit ratios for the average user today.”

Added on: 2010-02-12"If we had to pick a single reason why low-end PCs get a bad rap, it would probably be the prevalence of cheap cases and even cheaper bundled power supplies. To combat these weaknesses, we chose the time-honored favorite...OCZ ModXStream 500W PSU to power them. The ModXStream 500W is a bona fide bargain at $40 after rebate, offering efficiency through both reduced power consumption (as certified by the 80 Plus efficiency rating) and a modular design that allows for reduced cabling and, by extension, greater airflow."
Computer! Totaal (Netherlands)
"A good power supply forms the basis for a stable system. It is better that you do not save on the power supply and choose a powerful model from a top manufacturer. For our Luxurious Windows 7 PC, a 600w model is a safe choice. We have chosen the OCZ ModXStream Pro 600W."
Tweakers (Netherlands)
"The OCZ ModXStream Pro 700W shows a good low load efficiency of at least 80 percent and delivers more power than the sticker suggests. It meets the requirements for a good PSU that are necessary. It is clear that, especially in an 80PLUS certification, the results gained are the best and are built for maximum efficiency."
MikroDatorn (Sweden)
"The OCZ ModXStream Pro 500W is a good power supply that delivers the correct voltage even under high load. The fan that cools the unit is quiet and is not heard over the other components of the system. We like that the power supply is modular - it is always nice to avoid having cables lying in the chassis that are not in use. Last but not least, it is one of the cheapest power supplies in our test, which is impressive considering its high quality. The model from OCZ has more advantages than the Corsair model and no disadvantages, which means that it receives the "Recommended“ award."
AllRound-PC (Germany)
500W: "The cable management system, quiet fan and low power consumption score highly for the ModXStream from OCZ. A black 140 mm fan including silver bars is responsible for cooling the power supply. In addition, the fan may be replaced, with its positioning on the bottom of heated air transportation from the housing interior to the outside. The fan operates as a function for temperature and is not detectable in normal operation."
Hardwareluxx (Germany)
"The OCZ ModXStream Pro 600W performed rock solid and showed no weaknesses, even when we increased the load to over 700W. The ModXStream pro 600W has a 140 mm fan, which provides relatively quiet cooling and has a dual Rail Design with two 25 amp of strong 12-V Rails, combined scarcely over 500 Watts. This is quite an achievement."
Computer Shopper: Budget Buy
"For an entry-level PC with a dual-core processor, a mid-range graphics card, a hard disk and an optical drive, OCZ’s ModXStream Pro 500W is a fine power supply. Its cables are modular, so you plug in only the cables you need. It’s also quiet and fairly efficient. It did brilliantly in our tests, outputting stable voltage on both of the 12V rails. A large, quiet fan keeps the PSU cool, making it ideal for a media centre or desktop PC. With its low price, three-year warranty and modular cables, it wins our Budget Buy award."
PC WizKid's Tech Talk
"The OCZ ModXStream Pro has the performance and quality to deliver a consistent demand of power according to the load requirements. As a starter PSU a 500W model is more than enough, however if you're planning on have two GPU's the 700 Watt is a must, especially for the latest ATI Radeon 5800 series graphics cards of today. Another highlight of this PSU is the silent fan, amazingly quiet for its size. For the price point this is one of best priced modular and 80 efficient PSU's out, a definite choice in my books."
Bit-Tech (United Kingdom)
"For the money it's very quiet, modular, and works perfectly fine when we tested it. All too often it’s tempting to buy the PSU with the most watts you can afford, but the ModXStream 500W is more than enough to power the system we're recommending here and still keep in budget."
PC Update (France)
"The Modxstream Pro from OCZ offers very good value, it is stable, has high efficiency and is extremely quiet as well. This is our PSU of the month for this system!"
Hardware.info (Netherlands)
"Our recent comparison test shows the OCZ ModXStream Pro 600W as an ideal PSU for PCs with only one (high end) video card. This PSU has very stable voltages in combination with a very high efficiency and extremely low noise with the 14cm fan. In addition, this PSU also has another modular, so you do not have a cable in your PC too."
Computer Press (Russia)
“The surface of the shell is painted in dark gray color with metallic coating. Openings are in the shape of cells (hexagon), which not only helps effective flow of heat from the PSU, but makes it less noisy due to reduction in resistance of air flow. Top marks for the large 140 - mm fan, which covers practically all of its area. Additional connectors are accessible to the user when connecting removable loops. This PSU offers high efficiency, stable performance and is quiet, last but not least it is available at a very interesting price point.”

“A big advantage for the OCZ Modxstream Pro 600w is that it is a modular PSU. With an average efficiency of 84.1% and noise production of 33.6 dB(A), OCZ reaches very good testing statistics. If you want a PSU of 600w or higher, for overclocking for example, then the Modxstream Pro 600w is the most advantageous choice. The Modxstream secures a Bronze award.”

“The OCZ ModXStream 500W passed all tests with distinction. This new model of OCZ is pretty solid. Quiet and powerful enough for the mainstream systems, this PSU offers top performance. The ModXStream 500W has a good voltage regulation, with all the voltages within ATX specifications. The modular cables and big fan keep the PSU cool, but also improve s the flow of air. The design of the PSU is also noteworthy, with its beautiful paintings and grill with the logo of the manufacturer.”

PC Live! (Ireland)
“We might be starting small but that does not mean we’re setting the bar low in any sense. This entry in the Modxstream line may only come in at 500w, but it does manage an energy efficiency of 82%. Cooling is providing by a whisper-quiet 140mm fan. The EZ Mod cabling gives the inside of your case enough room to let the air circulate and for you to poke around for upgrading.”
WASD (Romania)
“The precision sensor is brutish for a laser sensor. Another thing that pleased was the cable management. It's a new and welcome. Both mouse sensors are equipped with a double laser beam, balance is very good and works ok on almost any type of pad. Both mice are available at a good price and are well designed.”
PC Ekspert (Croatia)
“The ModXStream Pro 500W is a great solution if you are looking for a good modular PSU to power a gaming PC with one high-end graphics card. We were especially impressed by the low noise of its 140mm fan which was very silent even when PSU was under maximum load.”
Award Fabrik (Germany)
“The most important point is the modular cable management, because for many buyers, it is an important buying criterion. The OCZ is also still good consumption levels and has stable voltages."
PCkoloji (Turkey)
"We can clearly see that the quality level is very high. On top of all, it has 80Plus certificate. The ModXStream has minimum 80% and average 86% efficiency. Those are very good values. Another advantage is modular cable system. There wont be unnecessary clutter inside your case. This PSU is extraordinarily quiet. We can easily recommend to people who are sensitive about noise. There are 500W and 700W versions in the series, too. Akortek is selling for 125 US$. This is a great price for a good PSU like this.”
Nokytech (France)
“The ModXStream is interesting for a modular 500w, available on the market for less than 70 €. Immediately, it was discreet and effective, while stable under testing. If you are looking for a block of low-power, modular and efficient, then the ModXStream Pro 500w is for you. It is ideal for domestic use.”
Islabit (Spain)
“The OCZ ModXStream Pro 600W is a good product that brings together some solid voltages, a pretty decent performance and an efficiency of 86%. Protected with a metal grill on top is a 140mm fan, providing low noise level that keeps the unit well chilled. The cost of around 75 € is suitable because these prices are difficult to find on a modular PSU and with this performance. More aspects that I liked with the OCZ ModXStream Pro 600W is the little noise it generates and the excellent 3 year warranty.”
AllRound-PC (Germany)
600W: "For just 80 euros, the customer receives a robust power supply. The cable management system, the quiet fan and low power consumption score points with our engineers."
Trusted Reviews
“The PSU has got an enormous 130mm fan, which helps improve cooling while keeping noise down. In the box you also get a neat bag to store all the modular cables, which is a nice touch. The 600w ModXStream is the quietest PSU on test (both at idle (34dB) and under load (37dB)), and comes in at a reasonable price. We think this will be a good bet for those primarily concerned with keeping the noise of their PCs down.”
Pro-Clockers
"For a mere $100 or less the OCZ ModXStream Pro 600 offers quite a bit in several areas. For one the amount of power you get is great. It is not often we see a high powered high quality power supply for such as price. And the power given will get you SLI and 80Plus certifications which is also rare for power at this price point."
Xtreme Computing (United Kingdom)
“I can’t fault the ModXStream Pro, it kept quiet and cool under a heavy core i7 load and voltage dropped very little across all the rails when it was placed under this load. It’s also rated for about 86% efficiency at typical loads which is sure to help your electric bill if you use your PC a lot. The ModXStream Pro is a quiet PSU with decent voltage regulation, modular connections make this ideal for those that want a tidy case.”
Effizienz Gurus (Germany)
"The XTC cooler convinced us at the very beginning, with its sturdy construction and attractive appearance. The lighting of the fan will certainly appeal to those who like blue in the modding. The performance results and price make this a recommended cooling solution, Thus, the cooler deserves the "Good Choice Award."
PCHS (Italy)
“The results obtained with the XTC Memory Cooler are certainly good. It is equipped with unique blue LEDs that give a touch of originality; very pleasing to the lovers of modding."
Bit-Tech (United Kingdom)
"Overall, we think OCZ has a great result here - the ModXStream Pro 500W ran reasonably cool, generally very quiet, and delivered solid efficiency and voltages. The OCZ ModXStream Pro 500W is a good bit of kit: it's very quiet, doesn't cost too much, has solid voltages, a pretty decent efficiency and survived our full load stress test. Most of the cable choices by OCZ are pretty good too. OCZ's latest ModXStream Pro ticks most of the right boxes for us.”
TweakPC (Germany)
“The OCZ ModXStream Pro is a power supply that appeals to our taste. It is pro-managed, high quality, low consumption and well-equipped at a very attractive price. We are also impressed with the excellent cable management. The OCZ ModXStream Pro-600 is currently the best modular 600 watt PSU. For only 65 euros, there is a power that really has everything you need. The effective power consumption offers really good value.”
TweakUp (Denmark)
“The PSU we looked at was the 600W version from the ModXStream series…and no matter how much dirt we threw at this PSU, it still managed to come out sparkling clean. Every aspect of the construction has been looked at and addressed to the utmost of care. If we look at the performance of the OCZ ModXStream Pro 600W we can't find anything to complain about here either. As a matter of fact this might be one of the most stable power supplies we've ever encountered here at Tweakup. OCZ ModXStream Pro 600W rams our Tweak'O'Meter to a resounding 9.5 points for a product that lives up to even the highest expectations in every aspect - and then some."
Tweak (Denmark)
“When power suffers through greater and more sustained loads, you do not notice large fluctuations in noise levels, which is a plus. The OCZ ModXStream Pro is varnished and has a matt black finish, which looks quite nice. All power cords are fitted with sleeving which gives a beautiful look. OCZ has mounted sleeving for all connectors, and they are all nicely finished - something other manufacturers could learn from."
Phoronix
"The power supply ran on this system without any problems to speak of. The 140mm fan was also extremely quiet and we ran into no setup issues with the modular cables. With dual +12V rails, modular cabling, a near silent 140mm fan, 80+ Certified, ATX12V V2.2 / EPS12V compatibility, SLI Certified, and OCZ branding, what would you expect this power supply to cost? $120? $160? This power supply is actually very inexpensive. The voltage rails were stable and in good standing, each of the +12V rails has 25 Amps, the power supply fan was quiet, and the modular cables worked out well. On top of all of that, this power supply is backed by OCZ with an excellent three-year warranty. Beyond that we would recommend the OCZ ModXStream Pro 600W as a strong buy to anyone looking for an affordable ~600W power supply."
BouweenPC (Netherlands)
"The 600W ModXstream Pro is stable on all rails and stay within the normal margins. A big plus point is that the PSU is modular in addition to that it is a bargain in our opionin. This is great for a stable, quiet and modular PSU from OCZ which is why it receives 4 stars."
Noticias 3D (Spain)
“If you are looking for a new power supply in this range, the ModXstream Pro will give you everything you need! First of all the ModXstream Pro 600 is extremely efficient and completely stable at no matter what load we throw at it. Furthermore the fan is very silent and this unit comes with several other features such as Overvoltage- and Shortcircuit protection. The price for such a high quality unit is reasonable. We have to come back to the high efficiency, our tests actually show higher results than what OCZ guarantees and we think it should be Silver or Bronze certified. This and the almost completely silent operation at a reasonable price for a modular PSU has to receive our Recommended Award”
FrazPC (Poland)
"OCZ ModXStream looks very attractive. It is a really good price in comparison to Corsair or Enermax. High efficiency and quiet work will surely be appreciated by most of end users. ModXStream has some more advantages – modular cables and 3 years warranty. This power supply is certainly worthy of attention. It’s very hard to find any power supply with similar power and modular cables in ModXStream’s price level.”
Technic3D (Germany)
“The build quality of the ModXstream Pro is clean and good. The 600W reached an efficiency of 84%, it is also very efficient during stand by, loadless mode. The fan is extremely quiet, so he OCZ600MXSP also convinced us when it comes to overall performance, stability - all that at a very good price."
CPU3D
“This supply is reasonably priced, with ample power to run your average pc, and some mainstream gaming machines. Another thing we really liked about ModXStream Pro PSU is the golden silence. This PSU is inaudible thanks to a large 140mm fan located on the bottom. The stability and build quality is very good, especially for a 500W power supply. Mainstream gamers will find the OCZ ModXStream Pro 500W irressistably attractive.”
Effizienz Gurus (Germany)
“It’s extremely hard for users to chose the right PSU, especially in the 500-700W segment. The OCZ ModXstream Pro 600W stands out from the crowd in every aspect: Excellent built quality, stability, noise level and low temperatures. Furthermore, the ModXstream Pro gives you everything your heart can wish for. The biggest surprise is that you can purchase all these features for under EUR 70, so in addition to receiving the efficiency award it also gets our budget award.”
OC3D
The results speak for themselves really, they are very solid indeed. The modular cables and large fan mean that not only the PSU runs cool, but it also improves airflow within the case. The design of the unit is also worthy of note, with its nice paint job and electroplated grill featuring the OCZ logo. The PSU suddenly stands out from the crowd. It fits into the cheaper end of the 500w scale, yet is extremely quiet, modular and stable. Therefore, we can whole heartedly recommend this PSU, which is simply perfect for all but the most advanced gaming rigs."
Oyungezer Magazine (Turkey): December 2008 “Editor’s Choice”
“OCZ ModXStream Pro which has Crossfire and SLI support, keeps your case tidy and spacious by it’s modular cabling. The silent 140mm fan cools the heat easily.”
The Tech Report
The ModXStream certainly looks the part of an enthusiast PSU, and OCZ scores points for bumping the unit's bottom-mounted fan up to 140 mm. This larger fan should generate more airflow while making less noise than an equivalent 120 mm unit, and we'll soon see how that pans out in the real world. Of course, a modular design is the ModXStream's real claim to fame. The ability to remove unneeded cables can go a long way toward tidying up a PC's internals and can even improve internal airflow in the process. The ModXStream's average AC ripple content hangs around 10 millivolts, which low and consistent across all our load levels. The ModXStream Pro serves up a higher output capacity, dual PCIe power connectors, and modular cabling. Score! It's also one of the most efficient PSUs of the bunch, and pretty quiet, too. For those looking for power and flexibility, it's a tough option to beat, which makes it our second Editor's Choice.”
Guru3D
“The OCZ Technology ModXtream PRO 600 Watt is what we are looking at today. In essence it's a highly efficient, very silent, modular PSU. All in all, very silent and thus highly recommended to any of the audiophiles that like silence. From what we can tell it's a fine power supply. You get a nice dark black look, great cooling, modular options and we figure, very stable voltages. You have your modability, efficiency and the nice aesthetics. Also very welcome is the sheer silence of this PSU. For the money you receive a good quality PSU with modular sleeved cables, fine performance and efficient output. The large mesh and 140mm fan keep it cool and in-audible. It's an easy to use, understand and connect (modular) power supply.”
Computer DIY (Taiwan)
“The OCZ ModXStream Pro 500W is a model with a very stable power supply. The design based on aluminum heatsink and 14cm fan allows smooth heat dissipation and overall low temperature at a very low noise level. All power cables are nicely packed in a black bag, and the installation is as easy as 1-2-3. The ModXStreamPro 500W is both 80PLUS and NVIDIA SLI certified and is an excellent choice for any gamer”
Bjorn3D
"This power supply has been pretty impressive. On the actual working side of things, it's as good as any that I've tested. It's nice to have rock-solid power that you can rely on. It's also nice to have the warranty that this one came with. Empty connectors will not use any more electricity than having a cable there would. Most of all, it allows the installer to clean up the inside of the case. It's a nice thing to have good airflow through your case, thereby allowing your gear to stay cool. The price point on this PSU is great as well. ll in all, I was pretty impressed with this PSU. For under $100, you will be hard-pressed to find a more-stable, modular power supply. It's a great bang for the buck, and it could even save you some money on the electricity bill."
PC Perspective
“The OCZ ModXStream PSU had no problems handling our cross-loading tests. In the first test we put a heavy load (36A/432W) on the +12V outputs and a light load on the remaining outputs. Even with this large imbalance, the voltages all stayed well within spec. The overall efficiency of the ModXStream power supply is very good. The efficiency appears to peak around 250W and remains consistently above 80% throughout the curve. Below 300W output and 30°C inlet air temperature, the ModXStream 600W PSU is virtually silent. The OCZ ModXStream Pro 600W tested out to be a good power supply. It produced good voltage regulation and delivers excellent efficiency. In addition, the ModXStream does its job very quietly, is 80-Plus and NVIDIA SLI certified, and comes backed with OCZ’s PowerSwap warranty."
Virtual-Hideout
"What about voltage drops, or droops? There weren't any. No matter what kind of load was placed on the PSU, the power rails were all very steady. It's very possible that this PSU will provide 650 watts at all times, but may sacrifice a little efficiency doing so. None the less, it's 600 watts approved without question. Overall, a 90% efficiency rating at full load is quite acceptable, especially when the PSU can exceed it's specs. It always makes me feel better knowing and being able to report that a PSU can live up to its recommendation. The OCZ 600 Watt ModXstream Power Supply is a very, very worthy choice."
CDR Info
"The ModXStream-Pro series from OCZ Technology seems to be a stable power supply unit priced for the mid-range market. The device has a modular design that allows you to plug the power cables yourself, according to your needs. This would please many users, mostly gamers. The 140mm fan that speeds up/down according to the produced load, meaning that the PSU will not produce noise during your daily PC use. The provided 600 Watt of power is enough to efficiently power your dual graphics card configurations. After all, the product is SLI-certified. But still, a triple/quad SLI setup would possibly require more power. We can safely say that we have to do with a safe buy here."
HardwareBase (Bosnia and Herzegovina)
"Our tests showed great voltage stability on both rails even during heavy load with an overclocked components. The fact that this PSU comes with a modular design will please modders and people who want to keep inside of their chassis clean and well organized, in order to maximize air flow. Beside performance and a very quiet fan, best thing about this PSU is its price of about 90USD on our market, which makes this PSU a no-brainer when it comes to picking a PSU with great price-performance ratio."
OverClock Intelligence Agency
"The OCZ ModXStream 600 is a lot of power supply in a relatively small package. Boasting 25A on each of its dual +12v rails, plus an additional 25A each for the +3.3v and +5v, the ModXStream 600 seems at least as capable if not more so than many power supplies with higher wattage ratings. It had no problems handling an overclocked quad-core processor and a single high-end video card under load. The quality of the ModXStream series is good, with a durable, attractive finish, nylon mesh sleeved cables and color-coordinated connectors. OCZ has even thrown in a handy accessory bag to keep your extra cables in. With OCZ offering rebates on many of their products a good bit of the time, it's likely you can score this little powerhouse for closer to $75, which makes it a bargain in my book."

“With its new models, OCZ made some really nice additions to their modular PSU offer. All the components within the PSU are neatly packed with efficient cooling for stable operation provided by the 140mm fan. Another thing we really liked about ModXStream Pro PSU is the 'golden silence'. All four models are modular and very quiet. A large 140mm fan takes care of cooling the insides of the PSU, and it’s so quiet that it’s barely audible. The 600W model is enough for a configuration of Core 2 Quad 9650 at 3.6GHz, 8GB of memory, an overclocked Geforce GTX 280. You’ll experience no hiccups as your system will run like a charm. Apart from silent operation, we must admit that we really liked the pricing.”
