OCZ / Support / OCZ DDR Testing and Qualification FAQ

How is OCZ series performance memory qualified? Is PC3500 or PC3700 even a real standard?
While some OCZ Memory such as our PC-2100 and PC-2700 are within industry standard specs, some of the memory we release on the market does not fall under specifications published by JEDEC. JEDEC, the organization responsible for releasing industry standard specifications, does not always release standards as fast as the industry develops. This often forces us to release memory products that do not fall within JEDEC specification. The PC-rating of our ram is based on the theoretical maximum bandwidth at the rated speed. (IE PC3700=3700 Mb/s)

What is the testing procedure for OCZ performance memory?
We have developed a testing methodology that stresses the part being tested at a certain MHZ speed both in a modified industry standard memory tester (these testers are often incapable of testing beyond 187 MHz) and in a real system setting. After developing a testing method for each specific product we typical turn over our beta products to motherboard manufacturers such as Abit and Iwill for extended 3rd party compatibility testing. We review each step of our qualification process several times before releasing the product to the public; even then 100% of our modules are tested to this spec.
Occasionally a major chipset company will release validation results for modules with no official JEDEC specification or approval. These validation results are not always released to the public. When we receive these results we make every effort to comply with the chipset manufacturer?s guidelines in full. This is in part why OCZ brand products have such a high level of inter-platform compatibility. We are providing a link to a recent SIS validation result: www.sis.com.
We have found by working closely with chipset and motherboard manufacturers we can provide a better product, before the JEDEC spec is released. Therefore offering tomorrow?s products to the public today.

Why do the Performance ratings of OCZ memory sometimes differ with the manufacturer's part numbers on the chips?
Unfortunately, most chip manufacturers do not usually release chips into the market before JEDEC officially releases the spec. Most high end memory manufacturers such as Mushkin, Corsair and OCZ will purchase chips from a manufacturer that are center wafer, high grade chips capable of running far beyond the labeled specification. Then the module manufacturer completes their own in-house testing and speed grading. Occasionally a chip manufacturer will provide chips that are pre-qualified for a certain speed operation.
